    Bought an e30

About 4 hours ago, I bought a 1991 diamondschwartz 318i 5spd sedan. Limited slip, gorgeous interior. I am now a proud e30 owner. This car isn't (yet) as fun to drive as my Z.....but I think I can fix that with a few modifications;). Pics coming soon.

Not sure yet. I'm going to wait until the spring to do any serious mods. I'm thinking about one of two options.

Option 1: ported heads, big throttle body, cams & chip on the stock M42 block or...

          Option 2: S50 swap.

I know the first things I'm doing are suspension mods, and bigger wheels and tires. The thing has steelies on it right now.

I'm officially jealous of you. 240Z is one of the sexiest cars EVER made. I've got a 1990 Twin Turbo 300ZX with a few modifications. It's actually for sale now because I want to purchase a Corvette.

Congratulations! I also a d shwarz 91 318i with lsd from the factory although I painted it white. I would skip on the bigger TB. Its not a restriction on this engine. There are plenty of other modifications you can do before you get to the cams. good luck.

IMO, you would be better served with a MarkD Chip, COP Conversion, lightweight flywheel (JB Racing makes a nice 8lb. unit that allows the use of the stock clutch), Cone Filter w/ a good heat shield, and adjusting the cam timing to suit your driving needs. It would really wake the car up.

If your going to spend the money on cams and have the head ported, then you'd be better off putting that into an S50 conversion IMO.

does th cone filter really make that much difference ?

my engine mods have been simple, chip, cop, throttle body heater delete, 4 pintle injectors, ported manifolds, elec fan ( delete fan and fan clutch) , larger hose pulling in fresh air rerouted to in front of radiator, instead of behind headlights, k&n filter ( came with car)
delete a/c and p/s ( parasitic drag, dead weight, ac was dead, p/s leaking) can deffinetly feel the difference, still get 26+ around town, 30+ hiway
girly mans might have trouble with no p/s

It almost always makes a small difference. Factory airboxes are usually a bit restrictive; in cars I've done the modification to, I don't notice a difference in power so much as a difference in throttle response. I'd bet on an M42, the gain in power would be maybe 1-3rwhp (not really noticeable), but the gain in throttle response would be noticeable.

The only restriction on the M42 airbox is the tube behind the headlight. No point in replacing it with a hot air intake.
