    Native German Speakers?

What would you read this plate as meaning to you?

    OBEN OHNE

It's for my E30 vert, and has a double meaning in German, wondering what the opinions of any native German speakers would be.

        Indeed.

It means "top without". So topless.

So a native speaker wouldn't think I'm an idiot for putting that on a plate...good to hear.

A buddy who's from Germany, but came when he was young, said it could go either way.

well, ohne is a preposition, so it should preceed the object of the preposition.

also, oben is more like "over", not top. the word for "top" when referring to cars in german is Verdeck, so the best translation would be "ohne Verdeck". so it just depends how much wordplay you want.

but anyway, i guess the main point is when i read what you wrote in the OP i read "over without", which doesn't make sense and is also in the wrong order.

"Over" is "über". I'd say "oben" would be closest to "above".

Ohne Oben is what you're looking for.

Yeah, the problem with German is it's such a specific language when it comes to nouns. You're committed now though, because it's pretty funny.
