    Shifter assembly

I'm trying to rebuild my shifter. Anyone can tell me how to detach the upper and lower shifter parts?

I'm talking about the parts #2 and #11 on this diagram:
    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...05&hg=25&fg=05

I have the early sheet metal shifter.

I did try to search for the solution but couldn't find an answer to that particular issue.

When I helped my friend do his we just cut a small slit in the bushing to slip it on. But we were also adding a z3 shifter. I messed with the old one like you have and could not get it to come apart.

Why does Pelican sell the internal parts as part of the rebuild kit then???

ok. so maybe i should be more "correct" with my statements before r3v police get me...

You can take it appart and replace internals but it truely is pointless. Dont waste your time with such a task. Reason being is the stick is worthless. Second reason is taking that appart wont gain you anything positive. If you want to upgrade, you MUST replace the whole shifter.
If you must know, theres a clip-ring expanding into the shifter housing.

Its a waste of time, just cut the plastic ring that holds the ball of the shifter with a sharp knife (not a saw because you dont want to lose any material)
When you put it all back together the circlips will hold the plastic ring together. It works, Ive done it before.

It comes apart on the EARLY e30 cars, but on late model you don't have to do that. Do yourself a favor and get a z3 1.9 shifter and two upper ball couplers, and one lower. You can then sand one of them down (you need to stack two of the together) to fit the metal console and have very nice shifter with minimum play. I did this on my early console.

I guess SIR and Jean are confused as to what you are trying to dissasemble?

It looks to me that you want to take the shifter arm apart, not that you have trouble removing it from the shifter plate. So if this is the case, i cant possibly begin to understand why you want to seperate number 2 from number 11.
Unless 1, the shifter has somehow pushed its way downward through the ball cup and you think that the proper way to fix this is to remove the top half of the shifter, or
2, your a mechanical idiot and are going about it all wrong. ;)

WOW! Is it that hard to provide a simple answer without recurring to infantile insults?

                      Thanks for the info anyhow.
