Anyone familiar with pulling obd2 codes?

If I were to get this:
(20 pin to regular 16 pin universal obd2 connector)

    And this:
(universal obd2 code puller to a usb cable)

And connect this to a laptop running windows with carsoft 6.5 software.

Would I be able to diagnose an obd2 m52?

I have NO experience doing this but I'm trying to get a, you guessed it, m52 running.

I would assume you are gonna be using the stock DME right? If you have the OBD II diagnostic port for it, any generic OBD II reader will work fine

Yep if you have a generic obd2 reader you can get the codes but you wont be able to run any tests.

Maybe I should just buy this:

          http://www.dhgate.com/bmw-carsoft-6-...3de19ae.html#0

Since it says it should work with carsoft. Then just plug it into an old laptop that still has that style port.

Do you think this would be the better choice? I'm trying to go cheap here, figuring I can *download* carsoft somewhere makes just buyying the hardware the cost I'm trying to figure out.

What's wrong with a regular peake reader? That's what I use on my s52. Unfortunately it's a little too honest with me, ha.

I don't have a lot of money... so I'd rather just acquire the software... then get some inexpensive hardware. Just want to make sure that the hardware will speak with carsoft. I'm leaning towards teh "carsoft" approved one even if it's 2 times the cost less hassle may be worth it.

Nothing wrong with obd2. Lots of pro's for it, hardly - if any - cons these days. I wouldn't consider my build half-ass by any means. Don't think anybody else on here would either.

Spend the $150 on the peake tool. I use it all the time, it's quick, easy, accurate, and proven.
