    Humming(Drone) Noise...

So, I've had this problem for quite a while now...it sounds like my wheel bearing is going bad in one of my tires...my guess was up front, but I checked both fronts by jacking it up and wiggling the tires...they dont click or move...is there other ways of checking the wheel bearings? I also jacked up the back...its neither of those...the weird thing is...that the humming doesnt always happen...which is weird...could it be anything else? Is there any other tests i can do for the wheel bearing...

I cant afford to just replace em all...im a college student...to see if that works. Any info or ideas would be great to what might be causing this noise...its driving me crazy!

There's no way to figure out? Could it also just be that I need an alignment? My car doesn't drift or pull to any side so I dunno...I can't afford to replace bearings that dint need it

It sounds like your describing a bad wheel bearing.

Have a more experienced friend or mechanic ride in your car and listen to the noise. It should be pretty easily identified that way.

I though the guibo only whines at high RPM's

No, when you accelerate a guibo whines. Sometimes a rear-end can be "worn in" and it can whine, too.
In my experience, redheads and blondes whine.
Brunettes understand and ususally don't whine, especially if they have blue eyes!

I have a video posted of this sound. mine was the right rear wheel bearing.

I too thought you could tell from the procedure you describe but it was solid. Only once i removed the bearing, could i see the discolored steel from the failure temps.

The sound is speed dependant and grew louder under acceleration. Yes, my LSD whines a little bit but it was outstanding, the difference new rear wheel bearings made.

Note, I was able to tell it was coming from the rear. I have no idea how to tell if its the front or which one.

unicorn, whats the milage on your e30?

heh, funny how a quality guibo costs more than a wheel bearing

hmmm...so i have to basically...visually check all wheel bearings? so take off the hubs? Sounds like its coming from the fronts....whats a bad wheel bearing look like heh? will it be obvious?

One way that I know of to check if it is a the wheel bearings is get up to a speed which the humming noises is very noticeable. Then turn the car slowly to the left and then to the right. If it is a wheel bearing the noise should either go away, or at least become much quieter when turning one of the directions.

                          example.

If you turn to the left the and bad wheel bearing is on the left side it should become quieter.

The reason for this is that you are taking the load off of that wheel, and the bearing will make less noise.

and ooh yah. My wheel bearing decided to fail on me tonight. front right. Hopefully I can have it fixed before it seizes.

Do u think warped brakes can cause a whining noise?
