Pardon me, but it seems no one cares.

My theory is, a man's electric touch on the steering wheel coaxed your balky tachometer from the ails of a failing SI board.

Welding without disconnecting the battery comes to mind.

my tach didn't light up for about 6 months and then one day everything was fixed randomly.

loose or corroded connector? hit a bump and it worked, hit another and it no longer works.

Mine worked last year when the temp dropped below 80 degrees. Then, during the summer it was dead. Now it works. Guess it is true. Cars only like cooler weather.

Every now and then mine is dead when I start the car but a good smack on top on the dash brings it on. Something's loose, may be the case with yours too.

^^^ I do the same thing lol. But my temp gauges gives me the big no no by waving back and fourth.

lol my temp gauge does the same thing, waves back and forth a few times then eventually sits where it should.

OT, where did you go to get work on your exhaust done ?
