It's not elevated RPMs. It was defective rod bearings from the stock of crap ones that killed a lot of '02 motors. If the motor has had the bearing recall, it's no worse than any other.

No. The US spec engine loses a little bit of power because of the headers with built in cats.

ooohhhhh! haha. I COMPLETELY misunderstood you. I was thinking "wut? No way does the throttle assembly on that engine weigh 340lbs!?!?"
yea, 340GBP definitely makes more sense.

There are some club racing series here stateside that you have to stick with the same engine manufacturer as the one that makes your car.
Yup. A local guy is selling his turn-key race S52 setup to go LS1/T56 in his E30 race car.

NASA is welcoming his car in Super Touring or something like that.

What Z31 said, 340 *pounds sterling*. Or ~$561 if you prefer... [edit] as someone said above.
As to the LS1 swap: arguably it also has a better CG, being a signficantly shorter engine. I personally have a *real* issue with mixing and matching that way, but it's a matter of principle: from a performance POV and probably a cost POV, the LS1 is the way to go.

Oh no, I just found a 2005 motor with 90,000 miles at a local salvage yard for $3500 complete with loom and ecu.

Good thing I'm broke, or I'd go pick it up today.

I.. wouldn't. Given the nature of the S54, I'd be very wary of purchasing something without a proven maintenance history.

I should not have read this thread. I already ruled out the posibility of doing a s54 swap in to an e39 touring. This is going to cost me.

A good head + cam combo plus a ls6 intake and exhaust would put you in the 450+ rwhp range with a ls1. I've seen engine and 6 speed combos on eBay for around 2500-4k..

I recently bought an LS1 and T56 from an '04 GTO for 4k shipped. It came with all accessories, pedals, driveshaft etc. and a warranty. :-D
