New horrible grinding crunching type noise coming from the pass rear

So I'm driving to work this am and all of a sudden in the matter of seconds I start to hear this horrible crunching grinding noise coming from the passenger side rear wheel area... its NOT affected by brake application but instead by movement.. but appears to be affected by suspension movement... over some bumps it will dissapear for a few seconds then make its way horribly back...

Rear calipers have been rebuilt but I'm thinking by the not so even wear on the rear rotors I'll check the pads and the caliper bolts. Rear shock mounts struts etc are all also new. Not sure about the wheel bearings but could they just explode like this?

any other ideas what else this could be or what I should check? Car is an IX

    thanx cats.

My money is on one or both parking brake shoe retaining pins pulling through the brake backing plate, allowing the shoes to scrape the innards of your rear brake rotors.

Fred is an e30 whore. He owns half of the e30 population in the north east;)

I bet it is the e-brake too. Have you tried to apply the e-brake in one click increments while slowly driving to see if the noise gets better.

          Rear shock mount perhaps?
Pull back your carpet and check.

The e-brake was the first thing I considered... and I did try applying the brakes in multiple increments but it did nothing.

So thats got me thinkin maybe an exploded wheel bearing or CV joint... but I checked the CV joint and wobbled the wheel and it all seems solid... so I searched and I guess the calipers like to fall apart? I'll check it out tomorrow morning and I'll post what I find.

They're brand new... along w/ bilstien HD's and some other bits. Torqued to spec... but I'll check regardless.

Yeah, if the parking brake assembly assplodes, then adjusting the brake up won't do squat for the sound. This happened to me on an E36, which has an identical parking brake setup.

Does the parking brake still work? A quick check would be to jack up the rear of the car, engage the parking brake, and see if either wheel turns.

I don't have any E30s for sale right now, sorry.

I just sent that guy an email... not the biggest fan of "gold" anything but slammed w/ some coils and some LTW's in matttttblack will look fly, i see potential.

Do you think my car is driveable the way it is? I'm at work and I have to drive it home about 30 minutes away... or will it cause more damage?

Same thing happened to me not too long ago. Passenger side ebrake had pretty much fallen apart.

Turns out it was the e-brake. The clips like mechanism at the end of the cable came off inside of the rotor... made the most embarrassing horrific grinding noise. Fixed/replaced it this weekend.
