    winter oil change

What is the oil capacity for a m20 and what is the suggested oil weight for the winter here in the northeast?

Also, for a motor with about 145k what should I use, reg blend, synth blend, or full synth?

    Thanks.

If you are running syn/blend/reg stick with what you have been using.

I run 10W40 castrol GTX or whatever is on sale during the winter

    20W50 during the summer

change it every 3k if running regular/dino oil

I commutte 80 miles a day BTW from 08901 to 07660 and back

I misread your second question...I use regular oil

It is what these engines were designed to run, and they will go forever if you adjust the valves every other or every 3 oil changes, and chanhe the oil and filter every 3k

I use 20w50 for summer and 10w40 for winter. all conventional oil.

As the above poster mentioned, That's what they were designed to run on. BMW didnt start using synthetics exclusively until about ten eyars ago. If you or the previous owner switched to synthetic, then just stay with it. Switching back and forth is bad. also, i would not reccomend using synthetic blends. as the two oils become worn and dirty, the conventional oil and the dirt start to bead up and pool inside the oil pan and collect around the oil pump (this also happens with switching back and forth with sythetics)

I dont drive it in the winter, but 10-40 or diesel engine weight 15-40 would be what I would use.

Ok. Done. Did 10/40 dino oil. The oil that came out was dark thick and nasty. I was also low about a quart. I will be keeping an eye on leaks though, it already leaked, but now with thinner oil it will probably be worse.

What's all this I hear about valve adjustment? I'm sure it's never been done. Is it something I can do myself?

yea valve adjustments are fairly easy to do, just make sure your car is dead cold when you do it.

FWIW, M42s hate cold weather. changed out 10w50 to 5w30 since the temp gets to the single digits here in central ohio
