Picking Up 1996 Passat VR6 Wagon

I have a line on a free VR6 wagon (5-speed :)). Basically, the story is my uncle gave the car to a mechanically inept nephew. He drove it for about 6 months before it overheated and he didn't realize it, and kept driving. As you can guess, the only problem is it needs a head gasket. Original owner (my uncle hadn't signed the title over yet), well maintained, low miles. Anyone have and experience doing head gaskets on a VR6? I know its a longshot, and I should check over on Vortex (I already have, there is a DIY there). Just wondering if anyone has ever done one of these? I've done a couple e30 head gaskets, but I have a feeling those are easy in comparison. Anyways, wish me luck. If all goes well, it will be my brothers car (I really just wanted to fix and flop it, but my he doesn't have a car, so I'll charge him and hopefully have enough for my ARC-8 wheels.

    Check your head.

It may be fubarred depending on how long the genius was driving in an overheating situation.

That is the other thing I was worried about. That will add up quickly... The mechanic quoted 3k for a head replacement. I'm sure I can do it for less than that. Were head problems a big issue with overheating VW's, or just the general issues that all heads have?

Head problems are always an issue on an iron block/aluminum head engine that is overheated. The fact that the VR6 shares 1 head for 2 cylinder banks means that any warping will be compounded. Great engine, as long as you take care of them. Do the chain guides & tensioners while you're in there.

Or just swap in a TDI & run it forever.

Doing the head gaskets on a e30 is easy compared to a vr6, but vr6 wagons are sick!

my buddy cranks out vr6 head gaskets like no ones business. depending on the state on the head, it shouldn't be too big a deal to swap the gasket in there.

^^Yup. Five of them in the family. Once you dial down the EGR, you're golden.

VR head gasket is not bad to do at all.

It's unlikely that the head warped ( it's not very common ), check it with a straight edge when you have it out. Timing chains are usually done in cars over 150k miles, some need them sooner, some later. If you have the write up from the tex and you have wrenched before it's no biggie.

Awesome. A TDI would be cool, but with 141,000 miles, i won't be needing a new engine anytime soon. Just picked it up, looks clean. Now I have way to many projects and way to little time.

I had a similar car pass through my family aswell
It had 130k when we got it, probably drove it 45k no problems. My mom totaled it
I was always pissed it was faster than my e30
No hate towards VAG cars from me
Everyone in my car has a vw or audi
The vr6 is pretty bullit proof

Thats exactly how I feel. It just isn't fair. One brother just bought a Mini Cooper S, now the other is getting this... I now have the slowest car in the family. Too bad I end up doing all of the repairs (not for the Cooper S) and rarely get paid for it...

You know... Thats what I was afraid of at first, but hearing from so many people on here about how good the VR6 is, and because my brother will be paying for parts, I think I'll do it. Oh... so when we got the car, the mechanics receipt was still in it, here is what it says, word for word.

"Vehicle is leaking coolant. Customer was driving on the highway when vehicle overheated and died. Customer added water and drove until the vehicle died again. Did this a number of times until vehicle would not restart. Confirm customer complaint. Basic vehicle inspection. Engine is hydralocked. Pull spark plugs and crank over engine. Blew out lots of coolant. Reinstall spark plugs. Engine now starts. Perform block test-Positive" Seriously, who would do this???
