Clunk noise while changing gear

    To be honest, I haven't driven an E30 that didn't do this.
    I would purposely let go of the clutch with out gas to see if they do it and they all did it, whether mild or wildly. Still wonder what it is EXACTLY though.

    hate to open an old thread but I have this problem, but only in neutral with the clutch engaged, foot off clutch pedal, and my tranny makes a lot clunking noises, sounds like a rod knock, I think its a bad input shaft bearing but some old bmw factory techy said alot the 5 speed e30's did this and all it needs is heavier weight gear oil, I put in the royal purple shit when I did the conversion. could the gear oil be a factor? the noise disappears as soon as I depress the clutch pedal, has new spec dual friction clutch, resurfaced lightened flywheel, new throwout bearing, and has done this since putting it in the car.

    When you take the subframe off youll probably have the driveshaft disconected and you can check for notchy motion or stiffness in the u-joint but that's would cause more of a vibration then a clunk.

    I hope it's not the driveshaft I checked it out seemed to be within specs. Once I replace the subframe bushings and I hear the clunk still blood will be spilled.

    I'm assuming my driveshaft is toasted to. Get a bit of a clunk on less-than-smooth gearchanges. And it has a good diff bushing and subframe mounts/RTABs with only 2k miles on them.

    It does. A bad throwout bearing will eventually make it impossible to disengage the clutch and could cause damage to the pressure plate. Sure you could probably just change a throwout bearing but seeing as you have to remove the transmission to do so it would be completely moronic to not change the clutch too. Chances are, if your bearing is bad enough to make noise it's already started fucking up the pressure plate...

    Very little. I can make it clunk by putting the clutch in, like the load is released and it clunks.
    FYI my suspension is pretty much all new. So I know it's not that for me.

    Mine has some "play" in the drivetrain that clunks when cold. I have a bad driveshaft I will see if that's the main reason.

    Basically, there are 4 bolts that bolt the diff to the subframe, and I found the diff slapping around in the car because 2 bolts were completely gone, and 1 was right about to jump out. Once bolted up, it was back to normal.

    What are you guys on? Throwout bearings are only used when you're depressing the clutch pedal. If you press the clutch in and THEN it makes the noise, and never otherwise, then it's your TOB. A bad throwout bearing won't make your clutch slip or feel "crappy" in general. It'll just make bearing noise.

    If you're in neutral, and it only makes a bearing noise with the clutch out it's probably your input shaft bearing (or possibly your pilot bearing). Getrag 260s have a natural tendency to just rattle in neutral with the clutch out, presumably because of input shaft bearing design. But it's normal.
