    The kids $475 318i

My son bought his first car last week. It is pretty rough (but first cars are supposed to be, right) and we're finding more than a few issues with it but he's getting an opportunity to learn about the e30 and what it means to own a 25 year old car. Seats are shot but we picked up a decent set of sports yesterday from MacBuddy541 and Gear_Head13 at their shop in Eugene.

The heater fan was loud as hell and ineffective, the wipers failed right after we got it so we went to the pick n pull and got a new fan blower & wiper linkage. When replacing the fan, I found that the the reason for the loud fan (beyond the fact that the fan was missing blades, held together with black tape and held in the housing with zip ties) was that the fan was making contact with the housing and the flaps on the side of the housing which I believe mix fresh air with heated air, are completely gone. So it looks like a housing replacement is in our future.

It rained like a mother a couple days ago and the car ended up with wet driver and passenger floors (front only driver, front and rear passenger). We checked the usual suspects and found a clogged elephant drain thing and the front passenger sunroof drain. Also found a little moisture in the trunk wells behind the wheels; the rear sunroof drains seem to be working properly so I suspect the tails, the tail light gaskets are pretty much non-existent on the passenger side and the PO used some type of rubber sealant on the driver tail light to try and stem of flood. We also found that the antennae is allowing some water into the trunk.

We've currently lifted the carpet and are drying it out. New exhaust is on the way and after talking with Mac yesterday I think I'm going to find a 325e/i donor for the suspension/brakes and who knows what else we'll need.

Here are some pics for your amusement...

Looks to be a good starter for your boy, he will get to learn to work on it and so one to make a nice car. It don't look to beat for what you payed.

If its not rusted out and actually runs i'd say it a good price.

My first e30 was an 84 318, too. Your kid should get some good experience with it. And the M10 is uber cheap to work on.

Examine the cap and rotor, a busted rotor left me stranded once. It's only like $25 for a new cap AND rotor... cheap insurance.

I believe you can swap the whole rear subframe from a 325 to add rear discs too.

Definitley pick up a stock rear swaybar too, as the 318s didn't come with them.

I have a 13.5mm rear sway bar from an 87 325is I can ship to you. it uses the stock sway links.

Nice buy, hopefully it's not too rusted out, it'll be a great car to start your son off with.

doesnt seem too bad of a ride, I see some rust in the sunroof cavity, and some more on the rear decklid, but overall, if it runs, doesnt drop parts, and can pass emissions (if you have it) 475 isnt too bad a deal for a first car. I know that I beat the shit outta my first car, so if it shits from overabuse, it can either be fixed (relatively) cheaply, or just scrapped as a learning experience.
