    Weird smell and smoke

So I just got back after a spirited drive home, nothing too crazy, and as I go to my trunk to get my bag, I see smoke still coming out of the tailpipes, as if the engine was idling (which it obviously wasn't). I got down to smell it and it smelled rather strongly of something burning, smelled kinda rubbery.

    Any ideas?

    car is my 88iX, m20

I was scared it was something to do with the engine. The whole exhaust system is nice and tight, no leaks. Although, on a semi-related note, there is usually a lot of white smoke coming out while driving (enough for me to see in my rear-view), and I've been getting sub-par gas mileage.

head gasket? does your oil look like oil and your coolant look like coolant?? White smoke can equal coolant in oil.

A little bit of white smoke is allright on a 20 year old motor but it sounds like you have a lot. Can making your cats "nice and hot" make them smell? I've never heard of that.

just checked her out, oil is fine, and looks like oil, no 'vanilla milkshake' bullshit

coolant was looooow, like bottom of the reservoir low. so i topped that off

i noticed i also need to tighten up my timing belt, between the cam gear and the alternator its bobbin up and down a good 1/2"

where'd the coolant go? you sure it's not being burned up in the combustion chamber?

Nah last night was the first time i took it over 4k rpm in about 400 miles of driving.

But yeah this is that second car that I bought. All it needed was a steering rack and tires. Now it drives like a champ. The 86eS I bought lasted from July until last week with nothing but an oil change and a battery. Thing is a fucking champ. I'm thinking about using the engine to build a stroker and put it with the 5-speed in my cabrio, which currently needs an engine...
