Any of you had a wheel bearing lock up?

I'm leaving for a road trip on Friday (400 mile round trip) and I have loud humming in the rear when turning left. I can replace it when I get back but for now I'm concerned that It could lock up on me on the highway. How many of you have had wheel bearings lock up on you?

its not common for them to seize up, but they will get VERY hot and infuse them selves to the trailing arm. then you'll need a new trailing arm, instead of just a wheel bearing.

Never heard of one actually locking.

^^ a few members on here have experienced it.

OP: I rode around for a year with mine making all kinds of noise. It never seized up. I would say it would be better to fix it, but i wouldn't say its a must.

400 miles is a long way to go and get stranded...I wouldn't risk it.

i drove around for months i was fine. made a couple of longer trips

edit ( it depends on how loud it is and how "in tune" you are with your car louder it is, the worse it is.

Replace it before you go. Just because one a few people say they were ok, you might not be so lucky. Do it now to save yourself a lot of extra time and money.

I've never seen them lock on a car, but it happens a lot on trailers. E30s have fairly large bearings, but 400 miles is a lot. Running it like that could basically weld the bearing to the trailing arm, like mine did haha

If its a front bearing, fix it ASAP.

If they are rear disk arms I might take them off your hands.

I drove on bad bearings for a while, they never locked up but they had the punishment of a trip that long either.
