It probably makes more torque at 3000 than ours peak at.

I would just want the SMG because they can be plenty of fun and you have the option of automatic mode when you are carting people/stuff around. Its the do-all car.

I dunno, in an effort to save money, and banking on the fact that most would opt for the SMG, I would bet that they would try to reuse a tranny meant for lesser power plants rather than making a whole new one. Hence making me suspicious as to the holding power of a manual tranny.

Well, considering they havent had troubles with the one on the old M5 I would think they would go ahead and make sure it wont die. I know the S50 tranny can take a lot more torque than the S50 (even in Evo form) would ever put out in street form).

Maybe its just perspective. I have the E30 for the real fun, for me the M5 would just be a daily with big brass balls. Id think that is how most of the people who buy them are. They all probably have their 996 for when they only have 1 passenger or for weekend fun.

Yeah but they wouldnt have the money for the 997 when buying the M5.

Personally I would love to thank Chris Bangle and Adrian vanWhatthefuck. They are personally repsonsible for my dad deciding to invest his money in a 997 instead of another bimmer. And of course thanks to Porsche for returning to round headlights and putting stupid fat tires on the back.

Notice I said torque band. If you look at the dyno sheets on this motor, it resembles an S14 more than an S62. The 7 speed box is necessary to keep it on its peaky powerband. A 7 speed manual would be a pain in the ass, so I imagine they will go with a 6 speed box and fairly tall rear end.

Also, the 7-speed was specifically designed to work with SMG. If they took the same gearbox and attached it to a stick, the gate would be all out of order. If they wanted a 7-speed manual, it would have to be redesigned.
