    power steering delete..

how do i go about running no power steering while leaving the pump in place? just take the belt off?

and if i really wanted to go power-less, should i remove the pump and do the block off mod thing?

if i were to do that, i just plug each line in the rack, or should i connect them? (cut hose and clamp in a coupler.)

    Thanks.

ps, whats all the jive about draining the liquid out of the rack replacing it with grease?

You can leave the pump in place if you would like; Removal is optional. If you simply remove the belt it will be very rough and almost impossible to drive. To run without PS you want to remove the lines, and loop the in/out. You can buy a PS delete block from "Silence" or you can jerry rig a loop line. Either works. It is necessary to drain most of the PS fluid in the rack, as pressure will otherwise build up as the rack reaches lock: making it harder to turn. I leave just enough PS fluid to lubricate the rack. The grease that Mentaleeill or someone did was to lube the rack in a different way. I have not tried this, so I can not speak for it. PS fluid will work fine though.

It's slightly tricky to loop the lines, as you will be using banjo bolts but it is possible if you know what you are doing.

well the reason i ask is because im about to go put on my 95 m3 rack, and my pump has been making some noise lately. i just worry that ill find out it has a worn shaft or something and i wont want it back on...
or for some stupid reason i cant get the rack hosed to the pump or something.

how exactly do i know how much oil to drain out? and what could be too hard about connecting the hoses in loop? they wont be seeing any pressure..

when looping the in/out fittings with PS fluid in the rack still, will it be as if u still had PS? easy to turn?

i have a93 m-3 rack with one of silence's delete block off's. i went from a severly leaking std E-30 rack to the M-3 rack and it was a little stiff at first because i was used to the p/s rack, but after a week of so i was used to it and i would not go back.

you will also notice a power gain down low when you remove the p/s stuff.

just delete the p/s with silence's block and drive happy.

it's a small incremental gain. delete the PS, delete the AC, and replace the clutch fan with an electric one all at once and you will actually notice something significant.

after some searching, i found all the info i could ever need.
now im wondering what snag ill run into with the rack swap coming up as soon as the sun does.

im going to shoot for hooking it back up, but if things look easier, i might try the delete.

i have to swap racks, and brake master cylinders, im doing it at the same time b/c it might give me more steering knuckle accessibility. then go get new tires put on and an alignment. i hope i can get it all done today.

                        +1

The delete that Silence sells is a work of art.
No hoses, no pump, no reservoir=space to actually work on shit (and NO BLOODY LEAKS).

it looks like looping the hoses would be just as easy... but this plate would make it really pretty.

Why would you want to do this? To save 30 pounds?

Saving 30lbs, saving the parasitic loss of the ps pump and the power steering on these cars is really unnecessary. Even if you just pull the belt at first it's not difficult to drive unless you spend a lot of time in parking lots and/or parallel parking.
