what's the story behind the 2.7i?

    you build it?
any custom bits or just various stock e30 parts?
    cost?
    power output?

i've been researching doing the same thing for a looong time now & may be doin it next spring/summer

The 2.7i was built with a FI motor in mind. It is a eta bottom with a i head. I used all stock parts to rebuild the motor.

Once I had it together admid comments from my friends that it would never run, I put it back in the car and fired it up...ran like crap..well like an eta really. Didn't rev smooth, sounded rather sick. Dissapointing..but maby because the compression is slightly lower than factory it just needs more air (turbos) and more fuel. Just after the break in period I decided to upgrade the fuel in preporation for the turbos. I installed 19# injectors from a mustang and a variable fuel pressure regulator, 173 ecu with JC chip. Took it out for a test drive and BINGO it ran like a champ reved smoothly all the way to redline, I didn't compair it directly to a 325i, but it was close in proformance, far superior to a eta engine.

This is not really the point...but once the turbos (IHI RHB5) were in running 14psi it was crazy fast.

I'm not sure where I stand on the debate of the eta crank being weak. Like I said I ran 14 psi at 7k rpm on it and never had a problem.

Cost of the 2.7i was the cost of a rebuild kit as I had the i engine and the e came free. If I wasen't going FI on the car I would have used the i pistons and had them machened for higher compression.

Twin turbo, eh? That looks like a sick setup. Nice job. What kinda power is it putting out? Is there much lag?
