    Backseat Tar

Sorry if this has been discussed in various threads, but it is hard to search and find stuff about it.
I already have removed the trunk tar and that was 52lbs.
I have a street car, but of course I want my car the fastest it can be. I was wondering If I took out the tar under the backseat if there would be too much road noise coming in?
The backseat seems to block all the noise, and I could always dynomat or something later on. I want to clean it up under the back seat, its all fugly and heavy haha

    thanks
    Craig

if youre asking, maybe you shouldnt take it out. but really, it wont be loud just because you remove that under-seat insulation. you especially wont notice if your car is already loud.

edit- and if i were you, id wait till summer or atleast a hot day to take it out. makes it a lot easier once its warmed up.

won't the dynomat add weight back into the car?

i did it. as long as the back seat is in, it isn't to bad. be sure to use a heat gun to get it up though, otherwise its a pita.

The trunk tar is there to achieve a proper weight balance, it does virtually nothing for noise.

Craig, did you notice a difference with the 50ish pounds out?

while mine was gutted, i noticed in my 318 a difference around corners. it was more predictable when sideways aswell.

You had a 318 that had trunk tar? I have only seen it on 6 cylinder cars

There is no reason to remove the backseat "tar". It doesn't weigh a lot. Most E30s that are turned into race cars or track cars leave it alone. Absolutely unnecessary on a street car.

it had sound deadening that the po had installed back in like 93'.

edit: it wasn't tar, but huge heavy rubber mats that covered the trunk, that were doubled up aswell.

Remove it if it bothers you, but it's paper thin. I did it just to be consistent as I was gutting everything anyways. Use a small chisel and a heat gun or else you're going to be there for a while. I think I got a grand total of 15lbs out of the interior without going behind the heater core and exactly 50lbs in the trunk, weighed it.
                        Jah bless! :pimp:

I took the trunk tar out of my car and it was a bad idea. The stance of the car was off and the rear end felt way too light and loose. I ended up putting some weight plates in the spare tire well to make up for it.

Leave the tar in, change your air filter if you want that ounce of more power.
