    Engine Dabate.....

so i bought a '84 318i a few months ago and was told the engine had just been "freshened up". well that turned out to be a false statement, as i only have 30psi in the first 2 cylinders. well i didnt find this out till had had put a bunch of time & money into the suspension, drivetrain and interior. so know i would like some opinins on what to do now....

Option A) buy a m10 here locally for $250 and through it in. OR

Option b) swap in a m20 that i have lying here. (this seems to be the clear choice i am sure, but my big concern is the harness. Does anyone know of someone who sells a swap harness for this swap????)

    i appriciate any input.

haha, debate, sorry i can spell.

Why is fixing it not an option?

well the cost of pulling the engine, tearing it down and replacing the seals, rings and gaskets will probably get me to the same price as picking up the other m10 would be.

I'd do an m30 and get it out of the way, you can use a lot of what you have now. (Rad, trans, etc.)

the problem is... i don't have an m30.

my goals are: 1) improve POS m10 in the car 2) keep cost down by working with what i have 3) have the car on the hoist for the shortest ammount of time possible 4) improve performance

You could replace the m10 with the one you can get locally, then maybe slap on a small turbo? While the engine is out you could also freshen the new one up (for real this time) and go with a light weight flywheel and clutch.

True, but wouldn't it then be a better, fresher engine?

it would be a "fresher" engine, but i'm not sure i need a new engine in a 26yr old car. plus, the amount of time the car would be down might be longer than what i would like. i suppose that i am wanting to take the easy way a) throw in another m10 or b) swap the m20 that i already have. i really don't want to pull the engine and completly rebuild it. i have a pontiac 400 that is waiting for my time. i appriciate the idea, but i have ruled out that option.

i appriaciate all th e ideas for different swaps. i know there are a alot better swaps than the m20, but the fact is i HAVE the m20 already! i dont have a m42, m50, LS1, ls6 or any other engines. i am trying to work with what i have and wanted opinions as to what someone else would do in my situation.

Ahh gotcha. Being an M42 fanboy I'd probably try and find someone to trade me an M42 for the M20... but failing that I'd probably just go ahead and swap in the M20. I'm not sure about all the flywheel / trans mounting / differential gearing etc that might cause a problem going from M10 to M20. I'd be more worried about that stuff than the harness issues etc. Someone else could probably chime in on those issues.

the m20 still has the trans on it. looking at it i think the mounting is so check and check there, thanks
