    Help with mk3 Golf issue

Hey guys – this might be a long shot – but I wanted to see if anyone could help me fix an issue with my girlfriend’s VW Golf.

Car: 1997 mk3 Golf GL with 2.0 motor and ~161K miles on it

Symptom: loud “squeaking” noise from engine bay. (kinda like a bird chirping)

Without engine running, I found that I can physically “shake” motor with my hands – and re-create the squeak. Because the engine is off, I’m eliminating things like accessory belts or alternator bearings.

So- I’m thinking motor or transmission mounts (?). With car on ramps, I got under the car and “shook” the engine by hand – but am having a hard time pin-pointing area or part that is squeaking. I’m no where near as familiar with the VW as I am with the e30..

Any help/guidance/suggestions/input would be greatly appreciated.

^^ Do the MK3 have same same hydrolic motor mount as the later MK2's? That's your problem if so..

      Sounds like an engine/trans mount.

the downpipes on those 2.0's deteriorate and make noise after a number of miles... they have a weird webbed flex section that is usually the culprit

Thanks for your input - this is exactly what it is.
I can reach up there and move the exhaust around. It feels pretty loose and it causes the squeak.

Ug - sometimes feels like I'm constantly fixing this car.
I guess if they can't find you handsome..

So yeah- i can find the downpipe on bma and germanautoparts.com - lemmie know of any other recommended online VW parts stores.

Not sure about replacement oem parts for mk3's, but autotech or techtonics both have after market exhaust parts. Sure you can find a downpipe there.
