btw that is not tape. i have worked on another friends e9 and that is some kind of factory installed stuff similar to the sound deadening material in the e30's

i thought the same thing when i first saw it.

as for the trunk i think the brown stuff is old faded trunk lining. Those coupes had some rubber\plastic coverings that when over the wheel wells. Looks like those are just in real bad shape.

Looks like they painted over some rust or didn't repair it properly before painting. Chances are if there is visible surface rust, there is more rust lurking elsewhere. I hope for your friend's sake that it isn't serious.

yeah that part bothered me as well. It looks like the main problem areas are good though. We know a really good body shop here in the atl that does allot of resto work. you can never tell with these cars and he has not seen the car in person yet, i doubt he will until it gets dropped off here.
