differential question?

i searched but i didnt really find an answer...well how can you tell what kind of differential is installed??? i have a 91 318is....i know its a limited slip, and seems it had been swapped at some point atleast thats what my mechanic said......not sure what ratio though...how can you tell?????

There is a metal tag attached to the rear on the diff, on the top right side.

If it has an S on it, then it is limited slip. The S is followed by 3 numbers, which is your differential gearing.

If the tag is missing you can spin the driveshaft with the car off of the ground and count how many times the wheel rotates for every one rotation of the driveshaft, but thats the harder of the two ways.

i changed the differential mount today...i saw the little tag there but i didnt really see if there was an s there is an s printed on the botton of the diff though...its hard to see cause its really dirty...but i remember the tag said...
