    Rear Axle 325i/325e

Anyone knows why pelican and realoem list two different part numbers for the rear axle for 325e and 325i? Are they different?

Suspension & Steering auto parts for BMW 3-Series E30 (1983-1991): Differential Parts, AKG Differential Mount Bushings, & more... and other parts related to Axles, Bearings & Differential

Also does it really matter if the car has ABS or not?

    Thanks!

Cars with abs have a toothed sprocket on the wheels (outer) side of the axle for the abs sensor to read. You do realize that NAPA sells these remanufactured for $87 + core do you? Just trying to save you some coin. I love Pelican Parts but you need to shop around sometimes.

He's inquiring because I have both half shafts from an '84 325e and he's looking at picking one of them up. Making sure it works ;)

it will work as long as the 84e has ABS

heck, it will work even if it dosn't, but your ABS wouldn't work then

and I know you were just looking at part #s, but $600 is insane. I can get them for $69/ea at my work (and that's BEFORE my discount!)

$50 to $60 at NAPA or Schucks.

            And yeah, ABS matters...

I got a remanufactured one at schucks for a 100$ including taxes. The only problem is the f***er won't go in.

Yeah I had to beat the shit out of the backside of mine with a BFH to get it back in the hub after doing my rear wheel bearing too. Hopefully it wasn't too hard on the CV's. Time will tell I guess

Just to clear this up a bit- there are basically 2 different halfshafts, one for the ABS cars and one for non-ABS.

You can install a non-ABS halfshaft into an ABS equipped car, but you cannot put an ABS halfshaft into a non-ABS car. The trailing arm is not cut to accomodate the ABS ring and while you *might* be able to get it to fit- the one time I tried it, the ABS ring rubbed the trailing arm- putting out some cool sparks when you drive at night!!!

                    ;)

                    YMMV.

there are also thicker and thinner shafts on some of them too-- euro cars anyways-- but they are still interchangable.

You wouldn't believe the amount of trouble I went through to get it in.
No amount of banging on the axle would force it in. I went to buy the biggest mallet they had and it wouldn't move. I ended up buying a 400$ puller made specifically for BMWs. The puller pulled the axle halfway through and then just broke in half (I'm having it replaced).
Finally, with the axle halfway in, I was able to put the nut on the thread and with a 300 ft-lb impact wrench on the nut was able to pull it the rest of the way.
I think Hans had a hangover when he was checking the tolerances on my wheel hub...
