to buy or not to buy?

i am looking at buying a 1984 318i.It has 140k on both the engine and the body but there is a louder than normal tick in the engine that goes away with thicker oil. The seller thinks its something in the bottome end.it has a completely rebuilt suspension including (control arms, control arm bushings, sway bar links, shocks, struts, tie rods) as well as new pads and rotors.
It also has a new oem exhaust system in it with about 5 miles on it.
I am afraid that if i buy it the engine will quit on me and i will be faced with an engine swap(something i have no idea how to do but am willing to learn how to). There is also a big dent on the front right side that needs some work and it might need a new coat of paint.
    The seller wants $1400
    What sould i do?

I think the M10 just sounds like that in general. It doesn't seem like too bad of a price if you can deal with it.

If i can talk them down to 1.2k i should get it? sorry noob question but what do you mean by forged internals? and do you mean it would cost 1.2k for the turbo and forged internals or how much would that cost?

IMO a 84 is not worth that much, especially with a m10 and body damage.

why must people insist on selling something for more than its worth!!!

i dont like the body styles on the 90s 3 series...looks like they added alot of useless body paneling and i dont have the money for a 2000 and newer bimmer plus i need money for mods once i get it.
