I usually make the trip home to Winston at least once a gas tank so I see how many miles my odo changes over the trip and my actual miles traveled is 111% of what my odo says so you guys may be getting even better(or worse) mileage than you think. Almost all the BMWs on Fuelly.com get average gas mileage, somewhere in the mid 20's though.

with the original ecu, I get 27-29 city and highway was always between 33-35 unless I held speed to like an indicated 60 or drove behind a semi, where I actually averaged 39 mpg at an average of 65 mph :). With Megasquirt, I'm getting about 25 mpg average. This is all using the odo and calculating from the gas tank.

I dont know what your argument is. I'm recording my results as objectively as possible. I'm going to be making the same trip on the same highway a couple more times this month so I'll post my results. I should add that I coasted whenever possible so that increases my mileage a little. I doubt the study you linked was aimed at gaining the MOST fuel economy. It was around a track with the focus on fuel consumption. This is doesnt take into account drafting semis, or coasting.

BTW I was able to try to get 33mpg on my 325i on a 600mile road trip under similar conditions as my 318is.

How accurate is the OBC for mpg and how exactly does it get its figure? Mine says 30.5 currently and has read as high as 32.4 on my 87 325is.

I have an iginition kill switch on my dash and use a pulse and glide system when driving city. I have done as well as 45 mpg in the city doing this.

I have a s50 cabrio with a 4:10 rear diff my optimium speed on hiway is 80ish. The motor runs most efficient when it is in its powerband.

the most accurate way to measure mpg is at fill up to fill up divided by the mileage.
