    Selling junk cars without title.

I recently started taking in scrap metal to the junkyard, just or the adventure aspect of finding stuff and hauling it in and the extra money. I had somebody call me today, and they have a 98 Neon that runs and drives but has no title.

The guy says for a hundred bucks he can get the title, but I'm not so sure. Can I sell this car to a junkyard if I cut it up? Is there anything I can do with it?

Then I got to thinking: If he owes on it he could have me haul it off then say it was stolen. Should I just leave it?

Edit: He says the title has a lien on it from a personal finance place, he owes 100 dollars on it. I assume he got some sort of small loan or paycheck advance or something and used it as collateral.
WTB late model, anywhere on the east coast will go as far west as Texas for the right car at the right price. 5 speed 6cyl only.

That question should be asked to a local five O or a lawyer. Some one familiar with laws in your local area.

Stay away from that, especially if there's a lien. Probably owes money on it and trying to hand the problem off to someone else.

Edit: Get it and tape yourself doing a burnout until the hood pops open

Here's what I think is fishy...

Instead of going down, paying off the lien and getting the title so I can just buy it off him directly, he wants me to come down and go with him to the bank and get the title. If he can't get off for a lunch break he was just going to let me take the car, then meet him at he bank another day to pay him and get the title.

Idk. A lot of fun could be had with it (field car), and when I'm done I can sell it for junk for triple the price I paid. On the other hand, he could report the son of a bitch stolen and I could go to jail.

I guess I'll just let it sit. Not really worth the legal gray area, especially since I am going to school to be a cop. I'll call the police tomorrow and ask them, but I think I'll just pass on it.

Stay away from this for sure. Sounds like a total scam.

I believe in many states, if a car is sold/junked on a mechanic's lien, the title you receive will be a junk/parts title anyway. So even if you do follow through and get another title, it may be a junk title. I'm not sure how Indiana handles stuff like this. You may want to search the state DMV website for more specific info on abandoning or obtaining a title on a mechanic's lien. Be aware that some of these processes can take months.
