Ugh, this question will make me seem somewhat noobish

Alright, so I'm starting a summer project on the new E30 I'm planning on buying and (here it comes) how do I go faster? I've dipped my hand into the turbocharging area (read a couple of writeups) and I've got a basic feel of the parts I need, what I have to do, etc. It all seems a bit too intimidating, and possibly somewhat unreliable (not to mention--will it pass inspection? I'd probably end up taking out the highbeams, and basically anything bimmerjim (http://www.bimmerjim.com) and this guy http://jdturbocharging.com/11701.html did) for a college student. Although the writeups said costs "come to" 1000-1300 range, which I could afford working (quite heavily--going fast is worth the work) over the summer, I don't think I could gather the parts, take a weekend off and slap the turbo on there.

Which brings me to a stroker motor, but I honestly have no clue what the hell goes into all that. I wouldn't mind some information (writeups, aritcles, experiences--anything!!) on that. *hint* I know I could just buy some used M20 and stick it in my garage and work on it, and then stick it in my car. At least, it sounds like I could do it. Although, I do need more information as to what goes into that.

I've thought about an engine swap and although an S50 sounds like fun, any of the ones I've seen for sale exceed 4000 bucks, which I will not have! I could afford an M50, but then what are some other performance gains to be had through that?

Then I just thought, what the hell--if I'm going to make my car faster, it needs to be able to handle this speed (i.e. suspension!), and I just thought about sticking the JC Chip on, some new shocks/springs, new headers, new differential, etc. I mean, I honestly want to make the car go faster, and "feel" faster, too.

Sorry to had to have asked you guys about this, but a lot of you have experience in these fields and I want to hear about it! I need as much information as possible!
Me: "I can't wait to redline my car!"
Mark: "Didn't you just break a rocker arm?"
Me: "Yeah, I don't think I've learned my lesson."
    Mark: "You never will."

Start with suspension and move towards power. That's the best way to go about doing it.
The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.

Yeah, I just thought for a second and was like:

Strokers/turbos/swaps sound impressive, but I probably don't have enough money for that right now. Besides, E30s look sweet when lowered

...Besides I don't need anymore tickets and I need to head to auto-xs and track meets to gain experience driving fast before I just make my car fast.

        Thanks guys!

Honestly, an M50 swap would be the easiest thing for a novice. A turbo setup that you put together yourself will require lots of custom work and welding. And there is a lot more to building a stroker motor than just bolting it together.

i guess thats a start but a stock m50 is pretty damn dissapointing. knowing what i know now i think the best way to go about it is to enjoy what you have until you can afford to do it right. stuff an m50 in your car and in the end youll spend more to make it as fast as a stock s50/s52 than youll spend on a stock s50. i just did an m50 into a buddies car and altho i didnt tell him, when i drove it i thought "wtf" is wrong here"? it was marginally faster than the stock m20 i took out. maybe im spoiled but i wouldnt waste my time on a stock m50

Yeah, I'm just gonna tinker with the car as-is. I'll be just as satistfied!

good call. make every inch of your car perfect and power becomes secondary. look at a solid 318is. its a hell of a lot of fun and they are basically dogs. but that doesnt matter as youre tossing them around

I see your point, as I'm already craving more power after a few months. But compared to the M20, the M50 is a much better starting point and has more aftermarket support, not to mention its easier to work on and more driveable due to the low-end torque.

I'm sure you'll agree that the whole power thing is all about perspective. I'm know I could get used to a 500 Hp boosted S50 after a few months, too.

oh no kidding, i drove my car 1 season and tore it completly apart the next winter throwing more money at it in search of more power. i agree the twin cams a better platform. it seems s50's are getting cheaper than when i did my s52. of course the mileage keeps accruing but you get my point. if you can source a decent m50 for 1k youd still need cams, software and big hfm, injectors etc etc. youd be close to the price of an s50 unless you can get parts cheaper than i can. theres a certain amount of pride taken in building your own also tho so its a trade off. either way, its a lot of fun

Going fast isn't too fun if you can't turn or stop. Work on these first, then the engine. Most of all, work on driving skills. No modification will make you go fast if you can't drive well.
Driving is the only way to go faster....
