Hello,
I've got a 91 M20 in total stock form and I'm looking to run boost
but I have a few questions?

1. How much if any psi, will the stock ecu handle? (example 60degree V6 Chev's EFI/SFI/MPFI- OBD1.0/1.1/2.0 can compensate up to 5psi...)

2. Can I run 5-7psi on stock headgasket, and bottom end?

3. If i have to mod the efi, to run the 5-7psi, what is needed? chip?

4. If a chip who can I see about it?

5. how do you get your turbo in Ca. to pass smog? Question for the Ca, boosted guys

If there way off let me know...
Not looking to do a full efi swap, would like to run as stock as possible

1. As far as I know the stock ecu will not handle any boost.

2. Yes you can, my Dinan turbo system runs on an entirely stock motor @12psi. Albeit, the motor has been rebuilt since the original owner and so far has a tad under 40K on it. IIRC the original owner blew a head gasket at about 100K, so I would keep that info in mind. At the end of the day no matter what anyone else says, its all in the tuning. If the car isnt tuned right you'll ruin a motor no matter what boost you are running and how built the motor is.

3. A TCD (www.turbochargingdynamics.com) has a chip to change your cars timing to handle up to 10psi. HOWEVER, you are still responsible to figure out how to handle the fuel delivery. So a chip only gets you 50% there. If i were in your shoes, I would do this right the first time and not skimp on money. My suggestion is find someone who offers a Plug-n-play standalone ECU for the e30, install it yourself, and take the car to a tuner to tune it properly. This will make your car perform as civil as possible, and by going this route you will ensure not blowing your motor.

Go read up on the Miller Performance WAR chip: it is basically a programmable chip.

I am also looking to turbo an M20, but I want slow, low, lazy boost. That car is an automatic and will stay that way, so I only want 200 RWHP, maybe 220 at the most.

I am simply gonna add 19lb injectors and water injection that kicks in at 5lb boost or so.

A 60 trim T3 should do just what I want, and I am gonna suck through the AFM with no intercooler at all. Might add a "turbo chip", but all it can do is retard timing and fatten up the fuel, so why bother? Hell, if I was gonna do that, I would just do a 7th injector from an ETA motor with a pressure trigger and a pulse generator and squirt some extra fuel in!

Lots of guys do "Metric Blue" head bolts, they are a non-stretch design, like $40ish, but ARP makes a stud kit, too. You can get a MLS headgasket from Cometic, but I would o ring a block, personally...assuming I wanted some real power.

Another issue your motor has when running boost is the water passages cast into the head are pretty sloppy. The passage forms a channel, and the gasket slips in there basically from lack of support. Lots of guys weld those passages shut, then drill out a proper passage, as water is only gonna flow where the hole is in the headgasket anyway, right?

If you grab a head and a headgasket, you will see immediately what I am talking about.

Personally, I am gonna fill the passage with JB weld so I don't have to heat the head to 400 degrees to have it welded. Hell, it is only keeping the head gasket from deforming in a coolant passage, right? It doesn't have to be some kind of major deal, JB weld will work perfectly, as long as it is well done.

My goal is to turbo my "other" car for under $500, total. So far I have most of the parts for free, manifold included. Still looking for a T3 with a .63 hot side for about $50 that needs a rebuild...gotta be an real Garett, too. Oil lines? I can bend a damn brake line. I can drill and tap a filter housing too, thanks. the exhaust is gonna be built so simply that the downpipe will bolt onto the "stock" system, thinking that dual 2.25" will flow plenty to get what I want.

Oh, and CA smog?

Legally, its not possible. Best you can do is find a place that doesnt care, but cops can still ask you to pop the hood and then you're screwed.

What are you saying? I had my car setup with a recirc valve that was quiet as hell and still got popped. Anyway, you won't pass smog and for less than 7 psi if you aren't looking to make huge power just throw and rrfpr and be done, although the war chip is nice.

My recommendation is to use a TCD bottom mount manifold and a standalone ECU.

I don't really know the particulars of your situation. I'm just saying if you don't have massive BOV noise, don't mouth off and best of all don't get pulled over you won't end up with bad news from the smog referee. You just happen to be a good example of how big off a pita things can be if you are required to visit the good people at the california smog refs office.
