    Good, solid USB wifi adapter?

I need to get rid of my PCI 802.11g card in my editing rig to make room for second dual head graphics card.

    - I'm on XP (still - until my editing software is approved for win7 I have to stay)
    - I'd love for something with an external antenna on a short cable - that's how my card is now. I can position it to get a good signal.
    - I'm about 80 feet away from the base - a linksys wrt45blahblahblah-something G router.

Any recommendations on a good USB unit?

    Thanks!

100 ft cat5. Once you go from a motherboard based unit to a USB device, you will not get the same signal/power in my past experiences.

I tried a couple of USB ones, they sucked.

I have a good usb unit for my laptop. Wireless card was built into motherboard and hp wanted 350 bucks to fix it. Bought a usb wireless card for 20 bucks off ebay and can get 1.5 mbs a second wireless. I'll get the brand when I get home.

There should be a penalty every time someone says "you should just _____" Like, "you should just drop in a s38"

Yea, I've thought about that. It's two separate buildings. Not sure how cat5 would do out in the rain/gravel.

                  Using D-Link DWA-130. Works great.

eBay link for same one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=220590811769

George, another option would be to hack that Linksys router. dd-wrt has some pretty killer firmware that you can customize (strengthen) the broadcast signal. I did it to a router at home for my parents and the difference is very noticable.

Yea DDwrt is the plan for now. I was looking at that - but USB seemed like a slam dunk. Crazy that it's not. Thanks guys!

Semi-awesome. I just set up a wrt54g v8 with ddwrt that I traded for some parts.

Got the wireless bridge working. Seems faster. Hulu plays with out the studdering I was getting. Not quite fast enough for youtube 720p HD. Oh well. I really was just looking to free up a PCI and get a more stable connection. The plus is that I have some printers that I can add to the 4-port router and take them off of USB/parallel port. That means things can go on a shelf far away - so that help alot too! And now that I have a router, I can have a wired connection for my laptop for file transfers. Nothing worse then a 2 gig file transfer over wi-fi.

While I was at it I got rid of my 19" rack mount case, and modded a old Intellitation case to take ATX mobo's, etched a custom PCB for atx power and led's to fit the non-atx case, wired up a small LCD screen to run LCD smartie, but ran out of time to mount it. I'm really glad to get rid of this freaking 19" rack case. The fucker is huge.

I used this tutorial for setting up the router.
