    Should I buy an E30

Hey guys/girls, I figured your could answer my question:

I'm in the market for a new vehicle to replace my e36 325i Non-Vanos, which has given me tons of problems so far and it doesn't make me want to purchase anything older but when I think about my friends E30's, they seem to be lasting and running strong. One of the mech's at BMW told me that e30's were built quite strong, and because of this they were expensive, So BMW designed a cheaper vehicle, the E36, in order to keep their sales up in North America.

    - How long does the E30 Last?

    - Which E30 would be recommended between 318is, 325is or 325ix?

    - What are the common problems associated with the engine so I can deal with them before they happen?

    Thanks for your input

Well, the real question is, do you like the E30? Have you driven one?

Until you run out of money, r3v it, or the odometer breaks and freezes time. But seriously, are you asking about the M20 motor? I don't think there's an issue going to 300k and beyond if maintenance is kept up.

Personal opinion. The 325ix is best in areas where winter roads happen often or perhaps in the dirt, but otherwise you'll want to look for an 'is as the ix is more expensive to repair and find parts for. 318is for fuel economy and toss-ability if you don't mind staying on the higher side of the RPMs for performance.

325is/x: timing belt, change it at least every 50k. For real.
318is: timing tensioner seems to rattle out often. fortunately, it's easy to replace, unfortunately, it can cause major problems if you don't. buyer's guide

      Thanks!

Yeah, I have driven the e30 and I love it. I find that its not as smooth riding as the e36 but it handles like a dream and it allows you to feel more apart of the car.

I am from Edmonton, Alberta so we get a fair bit of snow (sometimes even in June haha) but I have driven RWD for the past few years and I don't mind.

      Thanks again

They last as long as you maintain them.

318is for gas mileage, 325is for power, and 325ix for traction.

Typically if the car is well maintained, you avoid common problems. Dont fix something that is not broke, right? Change the plugs, oil, and filter. Check the timing and adjust the valves.

Yes, you should get one! Trying to find one in good condition around Edmonton will not be easy. Watch for rust and oil leaks.
