live you get 2 months free when you buy a game that can be used on live. or you can buy the headset and a years worth for 60 bucks i think.. no clue about the xbc thing

It runs through your internet on your computer. You set up the game through computer / find games. Then you play through your xbox. I don't know how you have your internet setup but there is a way with any setup, read around on xbc's site. If you have a good connection (basic cable) and configure it properly you won't have much lag at all, it all depends about how you set it up. And it's free.

Yes. It's annoying to listen to some 12 year old curse at me while playing.

I've also used XBC and it works great, although it's too quirky for my non-PC friiends.
