    Want to know the condition of your engine? Do a leak down test.

    I've done leak down tests on my quads for the longest time, I will probably be doing them in the following weeks on my cars. In my opinion compression tests tell only a very general picture of the condition of the engine, while a leak down test can usually pin point problems without having to disassemble the engine or take it off the road, not to mention they will tell you exactly how good a rebuild/fixing something went after installation.

    No it is not the same as a compression test. A compression test is a gauge that screws into the spark plug hole and reads how much pressure your engine can create and hold by cranking (usually by the starter). Now a Leak down tester also screws into the spark plug hole, however it has its own pressure source (usually from

        Whats a leak down test? All this new fangled testing is to much.

            What is this "leakdown" test you speak of? It seems highly irregular.

            I will stick to tasting my used motor oil and smelling my exhaust to test the health of my engine thank you very much!

              this doesn't work at all. If you really want to diagnose you engine, you neet to take the valve cover off, and the maf of then start it and listen for the minor vacume leaks.

                A leakdown test is a pretty good way to determine if you have ring problems or valve problems. For my Honda race motors, anything more than 2% leakdown meant the head needed to come off and be rebuilt. That was a cold leakdown test.

                For the chevy Ls1 race motors, I'd let it go to 5-7% before tearing it apart.

                It's just like a compression test except you are using a constant source of air when the piston is at TDC.
