What e36s are available in 2dr? Is the 328i/is a well rounded vehicle? or would you recommend a 325i over it?
In terms of fuel economy you really can't go wrong with a 318 in general. I find used 318ti's all the time on CL or ebay. If I were getting a commuter vehicle that would be my top choice.

E36 autos are vastly improved over the e30 units. E36 slush box for commuting purposes is not bad but you might tend to grow bored with it quickly, I did and now I am in the process of converting it to an manual. Honestly should have searched out a manual first but it was priced ? not right but cheap. I have since dumped 1500 into it in suspension and quieter exhaust, valve cover seals and new oil pan and gasket, plugs, cd43 head unit. Complete coolant system. They are sweet highway and boulevard cruisers but money pits.

Buy the best 328i 4 door and give it an M exterior treatment and drive it.

Later models tend to be out of kids hands as their not quite hand me downs yet, and miles tend to be lower. Look for cars with documentation and lower miles but prepare yourself for a coolant system redo no matter what. Ti's have airbag lights that are always seem to be on due to the seat buckle and Starters that are a bitch to change, Their Cat's are substandard as well and BMW recalled 2 years of them but they all tend to get plugged up and the car tends to toss codes and fail emissions.

        I doubt you get 35mpg+ in a e36 compared to a mini.
