    Vonage phone

We got a new vonage phone at our house yesterday. It’s pretty cool, if you haven’t heard of them it uses voice over IP and connects your phone over your broadband connection. It’s only $24.95/month for unlimited local and long distance to the US and Canada.

It has some really neat features too. Since it’s VOIP you can choose whatever area code you want. So say you're going to college in one state but all your family is in another state you can have a phone number that is local to your home and add another number to the line that is local to the college. Then your friends and family from home can call you locally.

You can also take the adapter with you and plug it in anywhere that has broadband access and you have your number with you. That means you can plug it into your braodband in your dorm and when you go home for Christmas or summer take it with you and have your phone number at home, or wherever else you want to take it.

It also comes with caller ID, call forwarding, voicemail, etc. The voicemail is cool too, it actually sends you an email telling you that you have voicemail and what number it was left by.

Anyway, just thought this was pretty cool, may be a good solution for you college people to call home and have home call you without high cell phone bills. If anyone is interested let me know. I got a coupon with mine that let’s anyone I refer get 2 free months of service if they sign up.

My family has had the same service for about 3 months now. It is pretty cool. The only things I dont like is that you cant keep the same phone number and the sound quality on some calls sounds like your voice is echoing.

All in all, cant beat the service.

I didn't care about the number, we haven't had a home phone for over a year now. Where we live we have to get a metro line and it would cost us about $52/month so we said screw it and have been using our cells instead. I got this to play with and it's nice to have a home number again.

My only beef is when ur ISP has problems... you're SOL...I am ditching my local carrier and contemplating on them versus a cell for only home use....decisions decisions...

it doesn't work during a power failure. so think first snow and hurricane areas.

voip is cool, but we ended up getting digital phone included with our broadband and cable. worked out to be a better deal too. i only use the home phone if i run out of minutes on the cell, which with tmobile happens like never.

Not exactly true. If your broadband drops connection then it automatically forwards all calls to the phone number of your choice, in my case my cell phone.

FYI you can port over your existing number, it just takes a little while.
