looking at used 318is what sort of mileage are most of you seeing out of the m42 engine?

    Norm?

If it's been maintained 200k is fine. Expect to get 25-28mpg combined.

200k is easily attainable. Mine avg 29.1 combined Dont believe the guys who sasy 32-35mpg.... First sign the guy is dishonest. H2O pump should be swaped to a metal one and keep an eye on the chain tensioner.

I have on that has 250k and runs like new and compression is perfect for only having the head off for the profile gasket in 93

what you are going to want to look at is the suspension, bushings and what not

My car is a 4dr with a 4.10 rear end, so my mileage is nothing to write home about. Still...gets better mileage than my Z gets.

I might be around 203 or 205k on mine. I plan on taking it to around 250k or 275k before I swap the new motor in.

I consistently get around 26-28 mpg highway and probably 20-25 in town depending...

I have asked this question on other forums but haven't gotten an answer.

I have 168,000 miles on the odo. None of my timing components have been changed. If I put in a new tensioner will it cause the older timing components to fail more quickly compared to leaving the old one in. I'm only asking this because it seems like a new tensioner will put more stress on guide rails etc...

              Thanks

I got 27mpg combined and 33mph highway before turbo with 4.10's. Now I'm getting 24mpg combined and 35mpg highway.

As for mileage, from what I can tell... if it has been well maintained these will run to the 500,000 mile mark. Just make sure you are starting out with a good head gasket and compression.

they will run forever if taken care of.

check the cam gears!!! if they are pointy they need replaced. should have about 1/8" flat spot on top of each gear... or else...

I drove mine with 225k 85-90mph all the way back from the west coast and used zero oil and averaged 29-30mpg
