    05 ish GM 5cyl owners

My roommate has an 05 GMC canyon with a very rough idle and a check engine light on. Got it scanned for codes and it is giving a idle control system, low idle code. Any one have any experience with these things?

It's got the 3.7L 5 cyl, new spark plugs, new air filter. It has great power above idle. Idles very rough.

Uhhh. Replace IAC, clean port? ( I think the Idle Control Valve IS the throttle body, this is electro-servo throttle, right? If so, clean, then if not that, replace throttle body.)

Disassemble, and clean the throttle body itself.

well 1st its a 3.5 and if what Farbin said dose not fix that then you may want to look into the dreaded broken Valve spring retainer thing ( I dont remember if that was fixed by 05 or not) I bought one of the 04's right when they came out.

Traded that POS after 2 years and got my current truck.

The shop I used to work at had one of these for a parts/courtesy truck.

It's power was impressive for what it was but this isin't the first time I'v have heard ill things about this engine.

Afraid of electronics? Me? no. Afraid of very sensitive ones yes. I've heard horror stories of these systems and I don't want her only fucked because I tested something with the wrong method. A little afraid probably.

                  Same concept

I'm gonna try farbs suggestion first. I don't think it's a broken valve retainer because it runs great other than its idle.

For some reason I want to see this motor in an E30 someday, MS and boosted somehow.

Flame on for that last comment.

Im thinking my M44 needs a head job for the same reason. I've replaced every vacuum home on the engine.

Cleaning the throttle body and the butterfly valve totally smoothed out the idle on my 04 GMC Canyon SLE Crew Cab. Be advised that the heads on the pre 06 Canyons and Colorados had an issue where the head was too weak around the valve springs and allowed one or more valves to fall way out of tolerance. This in turn caused check engine light to be displayed with error codes that pertained to the intake or exhaust valves. There was a TSB that called for replacement within 5 years or 100 K miles. I had the code since 88 K miles and then tracked the code and had a brand new factory head installed on the 04 ' Canyon at 99,882 miles. All covered under GMC warranty. :) Super close to screwing the pooch!

Good luck. Great trucks with new head installed!
