    undercoating

I'll have everything out in the rear next week. Should I grind everything down to bare metal, seal, primer, and spray new undercoating on or just wash, scrub it down real good and repray? Time is a little bit of a factor, but I like to do things right. Would going to to bare metal be a waste of time?

I would suggest adding the undercoating. thereisnoyun and I just got done doing our subframes. We built an electrolysis tank out of cardboard and drop cloths which was really easy. We de-rusted everything and cleaned them up. I took a wire stripper to them (on my angle grinder) and then primed, painted and coated them. if you have the time I highly suggest do it right. I now have brand new subframes!

I meant the undercoating on the body.

use a water based undercoating, not a petrol based. clean up is easier and it will not melt from heat or be subject to damage from degreasers.

In the handful of times ive done this, ive found it best to use Duplicolors truck bedliner. Works great for the lower rear valance and rocker panels too. Any actual undercoating product ive used either turns out too stinky, too clumpy, or brown.
Oh, and just pressure wash, dry and spray on. If no access to a pressure washer, degreaser, bristle brush and hose off should be fine too.

Yeah, use the bedliner, and make sure that all of the metal you paint it on is solid and water can't get under it. Badly-applied underbody coating can cause some insane rust, haha.

I've been wanting to do this to my car for a while now. You should definitely update us with what you decide to do and how your gonna do it.
                  Thanks

I shouldve added, before i sprayed with the bedliner, i attacked all spots of rust, or any area that could possibly startto rust, with POR 15 first. Just as added insurance since the any bedliner or undercoating will eventually wear out from road debris. The POR15 insures that at least the rust wont spread.

^Great thread, thanks. I'll be sure to grind down those key areas that you guys por15'd. I'll be using zero rust, along with an acid treatment prior..should hold up similar and I'll post pixxs

I usually grind off any rust, coat with a zinc rich primer (or etching primer) and then use a good quality undercoat (bedliner spray should be very good).

The TA/SB have about 4 coats of zero rust on them now. Should I go to the trouble putting bed liner on them too?

I'd just do it, especially if you have them out the car. ten more minutes VS doing it again.

                            just do it.
