    New to forum

    Hi all!!

New to forum, I'm currently a university student in Vancouver, BC. I've been looking at random used cars on Craigslist, I guess like a lot of ppl my age... [oops wrote more than I had intended, if you want to skip my boring background, skip to the 4th paragraph =)]

I remember the cars that I wanted, RX7 FC, 944, and 190E cosworth. I never really appreciated BMWs, probably because there are so many around Vancouver, but I fell in love with the shape and details of the E30, and it became apparent to me that this will be the first car that I want...

Well I'm on my way towards 3rd year, and feeling more "mature" and more settled with my school and job, it feels like it's the time to be getting an e30, or at least have the knowledge and be prepare for when the right one comes up.

The vehicle will probably become my daily driver to school and work. I started looking at some beaten ones 325I/ IS/IX, around 1200-3000 range, but most of them have rust issues. And having no mechanic background myself, I should probably need to pay much more $$ for a well maintained one, at least until I start learning my way around the car.

As I get better at driving, I also wish to take the car out on the track/ autocross, and I came across this 1991 M3, wow looks so beautiful in my eyes. You guys who are experienced might have different opinions... but man oh man. I was thinking about it all throughout my econ midterm today, lol.

I guess the question remains if I should buy a non-M one, slowly upgrade different parts maybe add a turbo after 1yr or so, or should I just go straight for something like a M3...

I've been doing lots of reading around multiple forums on the E30, and I keep hearing how great these machines are, making me really crave more and more for one, lol. Please share your opinions... thanks for your time =)))

    Cheers

    Go somewhere else ass.

Just kidding. e30 m3's - Most are becoming garage queens that never see the light of day really. Or they are so beat down they almost need to be "restored" just to make up for the abuse. Either way, it's a car with a cult following, and you'll pay for the honor of driving one - not that it will look faster or handle better.

Buy a well non-m that someone dropped some money in. take advantage of their time and money that they put into it.

The m is going to be expensive and harder to maintain. However, it is quickly becoming a classic and I have yet to see one go for that little money. Welcome btw.

Haha, you are in the same boat as I am, except that I am in Ontario.

Heck, I'm going into 3rd year as well!

I would think a E30 M3 would be very expensive, especially for students, unless you have someone to help foot the bills. I personally am looking for a good condition 325.

Thank you for all the welcomes =)

@SUICIDE109, haha I was anticipating this kind of comment, but well unfortunately for all of us, kids grow up to be adults and like it or not, we will take over the world. Just as our children will with ours... so treat kids nice =)

Hey Alpha, how's the search going for you? It's so hard to find a decent one on this side of the coast on Craigslist, so I'm probably looking forward to is/ix... and it's kinna a good thing that that m3 posting is gone... if I kept looking at it I might not have money for food, lmao. Lemme know if you found one =)

Thanks all for the useful info =) You've helped me realize what I want... One in medium-good condition, so if something decides to die, I'll learn to slowly fix it. The learning and car-bonding will surely make this a good start as I've hit the 20s =) Leather seats' a must too =P

Meanwhile I guess I'll just have to creep around the forum a bit longer...

Keep scanning CL every few days, something will eventually pop up, took me about ~2-3 months and 2 trips down to Van from Kelowna to finally find my '91 318, and I am very happy I waited for it.

Look on bcbimmers.com/kijiji/ buy&sell(?) too, I see decent looking e30s on there every once in awhile.

Oh, I'd avoid getting an IX unless it's been very well maintained, and you have proof. Those AWD parts can be expensive to replace if somethings wrong. Most of them are Auto up here too...

When you do finally get one, try not to lose it in the rain down there 'eh? Go fuck around in parking lots till you know how it reacts to the wet.

Thx for the tip Eecen! I just noticed this posting on CL (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/va...859817907.html) and was hoping some one could show me some light on what to look for in these vehicles... I should start off with what I know (I guess they're common problems amongst most old cars, but I've read these more commonly on the e30s)

                    1. high mileage usually isn't a big problem as the engine... lasts.
                    2. odometer stops? Again no biggie like #1
                    3. rust... (where are the common places for this? floorpan?)
                    4. rain leaks/ pools @ rear light + @ moldy carpet/ check rust under carpet
                    5. oil leaks, timing belt =O
                    6. dash crack
                    7. unmolested

I read that the car should idle at 850rpm..., are there any big things I should look for when test driving/ inspecting it? It looks clean from that one pic (lol), but man I'm getting quite a bit hyped, hope the seller replies soon o_O

Hire a pro to inspect your potential purchase if you are gonna go that route.

Personally, I say find a good place to work, buy 2 or 3 E30s and part them out so you can learn how these cars fit together. Then sell off the pieces so you can have enough money to either build an E30 the way you want it, or give up and buy a fucking Camry and get on with your life.

                      Closing SOON!

^^ exactly, it's worth the 50 or so bucks cost to make sure you're not buying a dog.

Well, I've looked at one car so far, but I passed on it (I made a thread about it: http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=177206). It seems all of the E30s in my parts are A) convertibles (ugh) that are $5,000+, B) overpriced, because the owner wants back all the money invested in it, or C) being parted out. I am looking for a D) a well treated, as stock as possible, 89+ 325i/s, hopefully under $3000 and close to $2000. Yeah, I am in for a long search.
