    Just a question...

As I drive, I have come up with a couple questions about my car, and I often wonder if anyone else has had these same experiences...

...LET'S hope so, 'cus I am sick of wondering.

    1) When you have the heat on, and use the recycled air...would the car get, and stay warmer than if you used fresh air? This makes sense to me as it is not pulling in freezing cold air that it has to heat. (But I havn't a clue how the heating system works)

    2) Anyone else have engine noise coming from the roundel on the steering wheel? I do, and it is a buzzing noise...no idea where it is coming from. My mechanic hadn't a clue either.

    3) man, i can't think of the third, I will edit when I remember...

Yes if you use the recycled air button it will heat the already heated air. the AC will also cool already cooled air as well. When you hit that button it closes the vents under the windshield so no fresh air gets in, it just uses whats already in the car.

Buzzing from the roundel? Is your steering wheel bolt tight? Are you sure it's not the dash?

lol See, I knew this one was odd...

POSITIVE its from the roundel. If I cover it with my hands, the sound goes away. ALMOST like there had been some sort of insulation behind the emblem that has now disintegrated. And it is engine noise, you can here it rev and when I shift through the gears.

The first answer i would believe is spot on about the air being recycled. It is heating already heated air. This could make it heat faster, but the heater can only produce a finite amount of heat. It may feel hotter as more hot air is kept inside.

The wheel buzz could be a loose bolt, not having the little washer on the steering wheel hub, and also could be the beginning of driveshaft failure. When my driveshaft went, i fealt it in the steering wheel/dash as well as in the tunnel. This likely not the case, but it was in my situation.

Wouldnt heating heated air over and over get really stuffy?

            Sold it.

what wheel do you have? If your roundel is buzzing the problem is simply in your roundel, at least for the noise.

Are you needing the recirc to keep the car warm? If so you have a problem because if I turn mine up to full blast I would break a sweat on the coldest of days. Do leave the fan off until the engine gets up to temp though, that way you dont get blasted with cold air and the engine can warm up a hair faster.

Well, the loose bolt might be, I doubt it is MISSING a part. It started doing it about a year ago. There hadn't been any work done on it, so its not like someone forgot to put a washer back on. But a bolt could loosen over time, I will have to check into that.

Are there any rubber seals or bushings that might wear down between the wheel and the engine bay? Thus allowing sound to travel upwards?

It doesn't have the dumb cover on it anymore. :)

It used to get SUPER hot. It seemed to not get AS hot this winter. I was like you, no matter how cold it was outside, there was no way in heck I could have left it on the hottest setting. I would have fried. This winter though, it would get OK. But not as hot as the last two winters I've had her. I lost my AC compressor earlier in the summer, and the blower doesn't seem to be blowing as hard...could that be an issue?

My father is planing on getting the air fixed when I get to Houston. I would rather not, I have gotten used to horribly hot summers and no air, it was a HUGE let down to have gotten it re-charged last summer, only to have the Compressor go out a month later. It took forever to acclimate again.

That thing in the center is the horn button, its got a lot of play in it. Use a large flathead in the gap between the button and the actual wheel to pop it out. Then shake it. Something probably just came loose in there.

Too bad I gave my wheel like that away.
