    Diff Rebuild/ Gear Change??

I have a 85 325e. As you may know the Diff sucks balls because the gears are so dam tall.

I was wondering if I was to rebuild my diff, Can i just change the gearing to shorter gears instead of buying a whole diff?

I think if it is possible it would be cheaper and ill have a fresh diff.:nice:

And do you know any websites were i can buy the gears and stuff.

I'm not sure that any site that sells ring and pinion gears. This isnt an f body. Buy the ratio you want and rebuild that.

There's places that sell E30 gearsets but really, you can't beat buying a used diff with the ratio you want. $200 tops for a 3.73 or 4.10 compared to probably $200 for new gears + the cost of actually rebuilding your old diff.

            Also, you are not golde30.

                As do I.

If he's in northern Cali he can get yours. If he's in SoCal, he can get mine. If he's in central Cali...FML...

lmfao, I didn't even notice that. Still, my post makes sense. It'd be cheaper to ship a 4.10 diff from Washington to northern Cali....at least I think it wouod...

I've been drinking, so anything I say for the rest of the night should be taken with a grain of salt...;)

Building a diff is not for a beginner.

Dude it's like a 60's model F/X body. All you need is the gears and 5 minutes of your time.

I say let him do it. If he has the know-how and tools, why not? I went the buy a used diff route for my e30, the price was right and it arrived before I actually picked up the car it was going into.

But matt is right, not for beginners. I've replaced the diff in my old vw twice (once to install the peloquin lsd, once to rebuild after I lost teh reverse gear) and getting the preload on the bearings was easy with the rights tools and shims. A bit tedious, but easy.
