    About to pull the trigger

On my first e30. It's local, pretty stock, rebuilt engine a couple years ago. Black, clean, pretty nice. 325is coupe.

He says the only problem with it is that it doesn't pass smog. He put in a new cat a couple years ago, so that's not the issue.

    What else could it be?

It drives perfectly and idles nicely.

    Thanks!

Needs a new oxygen sensor, definitely.

Check the spark plugs, and the distributor cap and rotor. They may be shot.

Thank you for the straight up response.

How about running it with that guaranteed to pass stuff? It would still fail with a bad O2 sensor....right?

There are a bunch of smog threads here. Does the car run well? Does it pull? If it doesn't run or pull well, it's got a bigger problem.

Stock everything pretty much, except for the rebuilt engine. He has a whole bunch of receipts to prove that it's rebuilt so that's good.

And yeah, it runs super good! It's quick, clutch is smooth, sounds nice etc...

Not sure on the pricing yet, but around 3k. It's in good condition...bodys straight, interior is nice, original paint, engines strong. All that good stuff.

Well - I forget the rules, but it's his responsibility to smog it in California.

I know it is, he's been trying I guess. He has it smogged for another year or so, but shouldn't his mechanic be in control?

get a copy of one of the failure sheets. if the motor is running well the O2 sensor could be due for a change, or the cat could be fried.
