Would you do automotive side work?

Is it worth it? I got a neighbor who just needs new ball joints on her Blazer. I would only charge her like 100 bucks plus parts because Ive done them before. Is it risky?

What do you mean risky? How long does it take on a blazer. If you do it for her you may also be able to do work on other neighbors cars and make a little extra cash.

Dont do it for people you know. They will call you everytime their car makes a odd sound and ask you to come look at it.

You may want to check out what liability you would have if something happens in the future.

My friends started taking advantage of my automobile technical prowess. Now I charge....more.

I got tired of getting texts every time something went wrong. I like to charge $1 per text and $.10 a minute I have to listen to you talk about things wrong with your car. Keeps my me time to me.

I only do the work if I need extra cash.....which would be right about now.

Risky as in the liability. Im not doing it as a business.

I wouldn't do it. When people pay, their expectations go up. Unless they are in a bind and absolutely cannot afford a real mechanic, maybe.

^^ Thats what it is. Her car is a million days past inspection and she cant afford to fix it and she has a new baby. I just don't want to do it for free or I will get ask to fix every little thing everytime it comes up. I have found this out for PC work.

Looking on the interwebs, that doesn't seem to be a particularly fun task. I can probably think of 100 different ways I'd rather spend a Saturday rather than working on someone's rusting pile.

This. Working on cars is only really enjoyable when your work benefits you and your vehicle.

My suggestion is to have her do something really degrading in return. I mean, it's more than likely a person of her ilk will probably just reduce the diaper budget by $100 that month and have her newborn just stew in his filth, than to cut down on the menthol Newport budget by $100.

I have a friend who likes to come over and change his oil, and I love to bust his balls about having to do something extremely disgusting in exchange for automotive work. I pulled his engine for him and I suggested that he take a dump in his pants while being filmed in exchange. The possibilities are endless. Oh, he did not take a dump in his pants but he did agree on doing something in the future. What it is, I do not know. What I do know is that it will be terrible and scarring.

I dont mind working on cars and I could use an extra hundred bucks. Basically Im mostly interested in if its a liability issue.

meaning if the ball joint falls off and she dies, does her family have legal recourse against you?

If so, I'd consult with the r3v scholars of law.

Yes. Or would it be the manufacturer's problem esp if I put it in right.
