    For all you F1/engineer guys...

I was just emailed this awesome PDF by Braun F1 about composite chassis design/mfg/testing. Really good read, not too technical so no need to be a PhD to read it. Enjoy.

The document discusses the use of composite materials in Formula 1 racing cars. It provides background on the design of Formula 1 cars and how they have transitioned to being dominated by composite materials. Key points include that composites allow the cars to be lighter, faster, and safer than previous metal designs. The document reviews the design, manufacture, and operation of composite structures used in Formula 1 and how they have contributed to improved safety.

I'm doing Formula SAE this year at my school. Maybe I can pick up something from this.
      Thanks!

CF monocoques are the future of SAE. All the top teams in the world run them. The learning curve can be steep but the payoffs are huge. My team (http://www.global-formula-racing.com/en/home) got 1st at Michigan, Austria and Italy this year. We would have had 1st at LA, Silverstone and Germany too had we not had some problems during endurance.

We talked about that, but USC barely has the resources to get a steel frame done this season, much less a CF monocoque.
I just transferred here/ joined the team, but once I get more into it I will definitely be asking you a few questions (if ya don't mind haha)
Looks like you have an awesome team. European teams seem to just dump money into their cars, so its awesome that you could compete.

No joke. TU Graz gets $250K per year from Red Bull... nearly 10x our budget.

            We still beat them :)

Nice! I don't have much need for the whole article, my current job isn't in the least bit related. But if anyone on here is seriously interested I'll get it from Jeff.

Thanks! I have had more projects than I like to admit that sits there untouched for way too long. Currently, I have my Jeep that has been sitting waiting for it's suspension swap for the last 3 years... a sad day...

I'm on the formula team at Michigan Tech. Last year we ran a hybrid steel/cf chassis and ended up weighing 6 lbs less than Tug even with an F4i and aluminum wheels. We placed 15th in design, but thanks to our idiot chief engineer and some shitty time management we broke the jank bits in our car at each dynamic event. Ultimately we broke a differential mount at the beginning of endurance that finished us off. 66th was our final standing iirc.

Running the hybrid chassis is a great way to leapfrog into monocoqoue. Right now we are developing carbon shock mounts.

For a little insight on my team, a past adviser has repeatedly said, "Every car has been amazing until it was built".

Yes, hybrid chassis are a good step-up, we did that on our '09 car before moving to full monocoque for '10

Another thing that really helped our weight was the Aluminum MMC rotors. Four of them weighed the same as one of the steel ones.

What was your weight this year, along with engine/wheel size ?

For our next redesign my team is looking at a hybrid setup, probably F4i, and 10in wheel assemblies.
