    Anyone with a greymarket car?

OK so I've got an e30 touring, it's already in my posession, in the states. It's from Germany, but was converted to euro spec, and finally i converted it to u.s. spec by changing to a mph speedo.

i got a letter from BMW north america saying there are no outstanding recalls. But I need a letter of compliance, and neither BMWNA nor BMW canada could give me that, since the car wasn't intended for us or canada

I've seen greymarket cars in the U.S. my question is:
    how was it imported?

Mwahahaha....welcome to my world. "Proud" owner of a 1985 325 grey market coupe.

You can't get any help, recognition, recalls, or anything that requires your VIN over here. Why? Because your car was "sold" in Germany, therefore putting it on the map over there, and in BMW Germany's comps. Then it got imported over here. Meaning: you aren't on the computers here, and you never will be.

Can't believe you have a touring. Gotta see that in person.

no answer for your question, but all you had to change was the intrument cluster (or at least the speedo)? No ugly sidemarkers in the bumpers?

The only thing he should have needed to do was change the speedo, and maybe some emmissions shizzle. The bumpers go untouched, so I can't imagine why they'd require him to put sidemarkers on. He does have a touring, not sure if that changes anything.

I was under the impression that D.O.T. approving a Euro car for U.S. use required door beams, cluster, bumper lights, etc....

I can only speak for my own personal car, but it has the speedo swapped, and had 2002 side markers stuck on the front and rear. Obnoxious, since now I need two front fenders and gotta fill the rear holes. Door beams, I have a 1.5" steel pipe inside my doors, maybe that's what you mean?

Can't think of anything else that was swapped.

Dude, I was afraid this would happen or you. Too bad you live in a tight regulation state like NY. I think it would get past the locals here in KY if you tried to register it here from a Candian title. They probably would not look for any DOT/EPA labels, etc.

Uhhh...grey market is exact that. It came in on the underground. Most grey market cars got "registered" by people who "knew people" and could "get them legal."

At least, all the grey market cars that i know (and i know a lot) in CA that is how it is done.

I would register it in any state, then transfer it to NYS. (im sure myself or my parents have enough friends around). Anyone know people who know people? lol

New Hampshire baby. Easiest state to do ANYTHING.

Ive got an address/residence there. Don't even need a title for heavens sake. You can sell it to me there, and I can get it all taken care of, then send on the paperwork. What do you think?

NYS laws are so strict now. There are a TON of greymarket cars, there's gotta be some way I can do this without spending 7k
