    Centrifugal govenor = Voltage regulator in ZF 4 HP 22 Trans??

    I have read on seveal sources that the centrifugal govenor/ voltage regulator in the tail section of the ZF 4 HP 22 autotrans can be replaced, due to slow up shifting from 1st to 2nd gear (when the weather is cold primarily) and that this will extend the life of the trans.

    Seems that it removes a lot of the debris that can cause tranny failure and improves the shifting remarkably. The voltage regulator sends speed readings to time the shift points and it's all hydrolic and the function of the trans depends on the fluid pressure moving throught the valves.

    Anyone know if this IS the correct part. Ive found ONE in the entire US and apparently they are hard to locate/obtain. I need to know if anyone has any experience with this. I wont be DIYing it, my Indy mech will do the job.

    Thanks for any info on this...

    The governor is a know issue with cold up-shifts, typically on an older trans the quad seals are bad but sometimes the passages can get plugged up with debris. You can get away without replacing the hard parts if the housing is not excessively worn.

        Sounds like you know what this is.

        let me ask you....

        Is the governor the box looking part at the "deepest" part of the rear trans?

        Is that gear more distal involved, not the parking prowl, the bigger gear right off the box?

          Yup, I repaired mine when it was still an auto.

          It isn't too bad to get to, you can leave the trans in and pull the rear tail housing to get to it.

            Or it could be the 4HP22 is 100% hydraulic? There are zero wires attached to a 4HP22. Perhaps that's only on the EH model?

              The governor is referred to a 'voltage regulator' in places, probably from a translation thing...

                That makes more sense. Putting a standalone electrical system in a hydraulic transmission just sounds stupid.

                  I know the entire valving system is hydraulic. The voltage regulator/ govenor sends speed data to control the shift points. So I read anyway.
