    E36 318ti & E30 rear half shafts....interchangeable??

Like it says....I am in the middle of doing my rear subframe/trailing arm bushings/diff swap and saw that my LR halfshaft is oozing, actually flinging 20yr old grease out of a seam between where the boot crimps on and where it necks down to fit into the hub. It looks like it JUST started ths morning. Could this be the source of my noise??? Dunno....

So the question stands, I have a set of E36 Compact(4 cyl) rear halfshafts sitting in my cellar. Anyomne used them as a direct fit to an E30 before?? I can only ASSUME they fit b/c when people say they have done the 5-lug rear, they only mention swapping the rear arms/brakes but nothing about the half-shafts.....Help please.

And another quick question?? How should the diff 'feel' when turning it by hand. It is out of the car and turns smooth with some resistance. The best way I can describe it is like it's filled with molasses, is that bad? Meanwhile the one I pulled out of an unfortunate E30 318is this morning, is a hair rougher and turns much easier. So which one should go back in???

BTW, they are both 4.10 open-diffs, no LSD.
