Looking at a 90 300SL AMG convert. to replace the e30

Recently found a 90 300 SL with a mere 68k miles on it. Only downside is the autotragic, but consideirng my new downtown living arrangements, this would prove useful. I'm just getting a little bored of the e30 (funny, esp. since I just finished throwing a pile of money at it and using it as a DD after 7 years of on and off again storage).

I'd mod the e30, but I'm not into that stuff. If I want something faster, I just buy something faster.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Hey my dad's first year ML320 only needed the ABS, 4+ETS, SRS, and transmission replaced in the first couple of years. And tons of other more minor stuff.

decided to not go for the car. The GF didnt' like it (the same one that didn't like the e30 after I got it out of storage in August.) She says the e30 looks more like me and she likes how it looks over the MB.

On another note the e30 is running a bit better lately since I changed the plug wires (orig ones from 88). The slight hesitation/hiccup when blipping the throttle has since gone and it just seems smoother now. I blew a fuse (23 or 22 i think) when replacing the wires...i think it had something to do with the reference wire or something. My tach, int. lights, radio, and OBC were all dead so i figured it was an issue with the fuses.

Gonna book her in to get the rear wheel bearings done soon...Not an easy task from what I've seen/heard.

Rear wheel bearings are easy if you buy the special tool. ...but unless you expect to do a bunch, it probably makes more sense to just pay someone.

I'm a fan of older Mercs, provided they have been well maintained and don't have any major electrical issues. The mechanicals are bulletproof, but sorting electrical gremlins on these things will kill you.

As for the R129, they're great cars and can be reliable daily drivers. But I would avoid a 300SL. It's the 500SL you want. Prices aren't much higher, so don't waste your time with one unless it's got the V8. See if you can find an early model when they still had Brembo caliopers and 300mm rotors (post 1992 models had cast Ate's with 320mm rotors).
