Help me find a GT car. Must be BMW

Don't get me wrong the E30 is great. Also have a 09 Tacoma. After driving both on 1000mi+ road trips neither is suited for the task. I need a Grand Tourer. I suppose the 318is could fill the role with some modifications (taller diff, better seats, cruse control, etc.) but thats not what I wanted the car for.

A couple that have come to mind so far.

E36 M3 sedan: I think an M3/4/5 could fill the role. My dad bought the first E36 I had ever seen in 1992 and we drove that thing from Portland to Seattle weekly and it was comfortable enough for me.

E46 Touring: You don't see too many of these. Plenty of cargo room for sure. Are these made in SC or Germany? I think when I got the 2002 325ic I either had to request German made or I just lucked out. Can't remember.

    E39: I have always coveted a 540 6-speed. I think the I6 would be a better choice for long drives but a V8 is a V8.

E34 M5: This would be a long shot and most likely $$$ to keep up but it's an Idea.

So tell me what you think of my choices and feel free to suggest something else. Budget wise somewhere around 10k less is fine too.

e34/e39 540i/6 if you can find one, and you should be able in that range.

My friends parents just picked up an e39 530i with the mtech sports package and its 5spd. The thing is an awesome combination between baller/racer/cruiser.

The e36 m3/4 will be the roughest riding car out all of them, to me e36 m3 isn't much softer than an e30.

No. E39 528, or M5. The M60/62 are kind of crap.

E46es were made in Germany, with the exception of many 325 sedans, which came from South Africa. SA cars generally had better reliability, IIRC. For highway driving, you want a 330. The 330s are geared taller, get better fuel efficiency (really!), and were even available with a 6spd (although those cars will probably be out of your price range). The 325 wagon had a 3.46 rear gear, so it's kind of buzzy on the highway compared with the 2.93 of the 330.

It's a tried and true once refined motor that will easily do 250k+ miles, makes good reliable power, and costs half as much as an M5 to maintain. Sounds pretty crappy...

Beyond the Nikasil issue? I don't know much about the engine. I just know the 540 6-speed was something I found unique (especially pre e39 M5) and cool.

The only true answer to this thread seeing the E46/E39 are sedans. The E31 being the only other option.

If you want a Gt, you need to look at the 6s and 8s. Those are the true BMW tourers. A flawless 850i would be awesome for cruising at highway speeds for hours.
