*EDIT* OWNED!!!
So here's the story:
First of all, it was the 1997 540i/6, the M3's are safe and sound. I was doing errands today and I went in to the supermarket to pick up some packing tape. Upon exiting, I noticed that my car alarm was sounding and that there was a lady standing near my car. As I approached, she asked, "Is this your car?" I told her yes, and she explained that someone had hit it, set off the alarm, and that she had seen the whole thing. She was writing a note that contained the license plate number. The damage was a large scuff, maybe 6x12 inches long on the driver's side rear bumper. It's too deep to buff, so there will be paint work, but it doesn't look like anything is deformed too badly. I took her information and went on my way, happy that someone had seen it.
When I got home, I called the police and my insurance. The insurance was excited I had a witness. The police took the info, and ended up going to the house the car was currently registered under. In my town, there are lots of tech workers, so people move around a lot(with the jobs) as a result of the dynamic industry. Unfortunately, the person no longer lived there, and there was no current or forwarding information. The police told me I was pretty much out of luck, because they didn't have a lead and if the car surfaced in the future via registration or ticket, it wouldn't be linked to the case.
Fast forward 1 hour.
I'm walking outside to take pictures of the damage, particularly the paint chips, because I'm determined to find the fucker. For whatever reason, license plates stick in my mind in general, particularly the 3 letters following the first digit as I always pronounce the word they make in my head. I felt like I had seen the 3 letter word before, so I took a quick walk around my parking lot to check it out. Sure as shit, not 5 spaces away was the motherfucker's car who hit me(it's an apartment complex of about 200 units). Needless to say, cops called, and show up.
The cops first concern was how I found the car. I alleviated their concerns(hopefully) when I pointed out my parked car a few spaces away. Next was how to find the guy, since his car wasn't linked to his address. The car was left unlocked, so they went fishing in the glovebox and found the current address on a document there. They went to the front door and started talking to him. He immediately denied it, made the excuse his cousin was driving the car that day, and basically told the officers to go to hell. Then he found out that we had a witness, and that hit and run is a misdemeanor. He quickly because more freeflowing with his information and became apologetic for inconveniencing me.
In the end, because I couldn't be sure if it was him or his cousin, and because he was older, I couldn't be sure if he truly knew(at least beyond a shadow of a doubt) whether or not he knew he hit me, there was no hit and run citation issued. I did however get his info and have a police report that pretty much assures that my insurance claim will be handled properly.
Cliffs:
-Guy hit and runs the 540
-Witness sees it
-Cops tell me I'm SOL because they can't find guy
-I find guy
-owned
