I think it might be the alternator

Voltage regulator. Did mine yesterday after doing exactly what you did (buying a battery), then realized that it wasn't charging. My battery was dead anyway.

Takes a minute to replace, but the airbox is the annoying thing to put back.

Anyone know if you have to reset the system afterward? My battery light doesn't flash on when I start the car up.

there is nothing to ever reset on an E30. I can tell you though, your Alternator is no longer working if that light isn't coming on anymore. your battery will be dead in the next few days and you will be sitting on the side of the road.

put a multimeter on the battery with the car turned off-- check the reading- start the car and it should raise up to about 14.2 volts-- if it doesnt raise, its not working.--t his is a easy not very exact way to do a quick check.

My car has yet to fail. Maybe the bulb is out.
